Equity in Computer Science

In this workshop participants will use their devices to create and code a website. Using the Skill Struck platform, participants will learn how to design the layout of a website to include images, videos, colors, and many other elements. We will also cover the diversity gap in the tech field and how school leaders can be the change. To do this, we will show our case study with Moreno Valley Unified School District and how they increased computer science enrollment by 43% among Latinx, female, and black students. We will go over the tools that aided MVUSD in their success of increasing underrepresented students' involvement in computer science. We hope to provide educators with a proven pathway to ignite their students' potential and equip students with the tools necessary to be best prepared for 21st-century jobs.

Learn how to utilize the dozen learning and content platforms from the State Library's K-12 Online Content Project in this interactive session. Platforms include Britannica School and Escolar (native Spanish); National Geographic Kids, Interactive Science, and Environmental Studies (from Gale); CultureGrams, SIRS Discoverer, SIRS Issues Researcher, eLibrary, Research Companion, and Central Student (from ProQuest); and TeachingBooks' platform of resources from author interviews to lesson plans. All public-school K-12 educators and students have no-cost access to these state-paid resources. Best to bring a laptop or Chromebook, although phones and tablets will work too.
